Hobbies and leisure time - a catch 22 situation?

Let me start by directly asking your opinion on the title. Agree or not really?

In my opinion, these two concepts of hobby and leisure time can present themselves as a chicken and egg scenario for some of us amid our busy schedules. In other words, should you have hobbies and then figure out some time to enjoy them OR the other way around where if you get some free time, only then you can think of following some hobby?

While I find myself naturally inclined to the first case where I already have hobbies and I try to make room for them from time to time (just like writing that I am doing now), I also know that many of us struggle with our busy schedules. I have heard from friends and family on how sometimes 24 hours are not even enough for the core tasks, leave aside hobbies. But here's one perspective I would like to share with those of you who may not be able to dedicate time for hobbies in their current lives.

In your current routine, you may not feel that you are missing out on anything by skipping me-time. Especially when you have kids and how you have to navigate multiple calendars including family, kids, and/or work. But think about a few years from now when kids will be grown up and have their own activities and circle. Whether it is about cultivating hobbies at that time or picking up the dormant ones, either way, it can be challenging. To me, hobbies not only offer enjoyment but pursuing them also offers a sense of self. So, why to lose that sense of joy even all these years waiting for a phase when your core responsibilities will be done (assuming they will ever be done in the first place. There's always something next). And another plus of considering time investment on hobbies is that it would help in your kids' development too in subtle ways when they observe your self-care attitude.

Let me share the things I like doing outside work and I would look forward to hearing about yours. I enjoy writing, reading (both technical and non-technical), watching vlogs, documentaries, any interesting shows that match my interests. Cleaning the house also turns into therapy and a hobby sometimes! How about you? What are the things that you look forward to picking up in your me-time or things you wish you could do, only if you had time (back to the dilemma!).

For me it's definitely the first scenario. That I really need to just stay firm that I will do something that interests me and that I will make time for it. If I think that I'll wait till I get free time to do something, then it never happens. Especially if the hobby that I want to do requires some specific materials, then i just try to make sure I have those on hand, so that at any point in time if I want to do it, I don't postpone it due to not having the materials around. Example, stitching, acrylic painting etc.

Agree, Neha. If we wait to get time, it will never happen.
Glad you take some time for yourself :)
And thanks so much for reading and sharing!
